The daughter of ethnologist Nicole Échard explores, with students from Niamey, her mother’s work on the colonial legacy in Niger.
Documentary filmmaker Aminatou Échard, daughter of ethnologist Nicole Échard, who conducted research in Niger from 1964 to 1994, embarks on a journey retracing her mother’s steps. In addition to an African name, her mother bequeathed to her the 16mm films she shot in Niger and the correspondence with her principal field collaborator, Garba Maïgoye. With Maïgoye and art students from Niamey, Aminatou seeks a new interpretation of these accounts, dating from the early days of Niger’s independence, and finds herself confronted with the complexities of the present.
